Asen’s Fortress was named after the name of one of the greatest kings of Bulgaria – Ivan Asen II. The earliest archeological findings for Asen’s Fortress date back from the time of the Thracians. The area was also inhabited during the Ancient Roman and Early Byzantine period. It was considerably renovated in 1231, during the rule of Bulgarian King Ivan Asen II, to serve as a border fortification against Latin raids.
Bachkovo Monastery is the second largest in Bulgaria. It was built in 1083, situated in the Chepelare River Valley, picturesquely surrounded by the hills of Rhodope Mountains.
Plovdiv is one of the oldest cities in the world, with more than 6000 years of history. It was built betwen 7 hills. 2400 year ago the city was conquered by Philip IIof Macedon, the father of Alexander the Great. The city was renamed – Philippopolis, it means The city of Philip. The contemporary name PLovdiv is one of the varieties of Philippopolis. The beautiful houses in Plovdiv Old Town were mostly built in 18th and 19th century.
We are going to pick you up at 09:00 from your accommodation place. Our trip to Asen’s Fortress takes approximately 2 hours. Once we get there, we are going uphill to the ruins of the fortress and the church built in the 13th century. After that we are visiting the Bachkovo Monastery. Finally, it is time for the old town of Plovdiv and the city centre. After a 2-hour drive, arriving back to Sofia around 20:00.
